Top Ten Viral Videos for October and November

Top Viral Videos for October and November 2010

Humor, music and celebrities spiced up the 10 most-watched viral videos of the past 30 days as tracked by Unruly Media.

Funny Videos Get Laughs (and Eyeballs)

Nine of the 10 videos on Unruly Media's list feature humor as a primary tool to capture viewer interest. Number one video "LeBron Rise" from Nike Basketball features NBA star LeBron James humorously reviewing his controversial decision to switch teams and the uproar of negative publicity which followed.

Other funny videos included the Sesame Street character Grover parodying the highly popular series of Old Spice "Smell Like a Man" ads, a spoof on the fairy tale of the Three Little Pigs from insurance provider Geico, and roller skating infants. The only video not to overtly feature humor was the DC Shoes Gymkhana video, an entry in a popular series of videos documenting dazzling feats of stunt auto driving.

Celebs to the Rescue

Celebrities have always been a popular advertising tool, and several of the videos on this list prominently feature celebrities. NBA stars are features in two videos: the aforementioned Nike Basketball video with LeBron James and a clip promoting the new video game "Call of Duty – Black Ops" which has Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant, as well as talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, engaging in humorously intense urban warfare to demonstrate the virtual reality of the game environment.

In addition, actress Jaime Pressly participates in a raunchy mock talk show promoting Axe body spray and of course, anyone who has come of age in the past 40 years knows lovable Grover, the harmless blue monster from Sesame Street.

Music Amps Things Up

Three videos prominently feature music. T-Mobile's "Welcome Back" spot is a recording of a presumably genuine ambush singalong performed for arriving travelers at London's Heathrow Airport. In addition, the Call of Duty clip uses the Rolling Stones antiwar classic "Gimme Shelter" to set the mood, and the number 10 clip from British dairy Yeo Valley features a mock rap extolling how tough it is to be a dairy farmer.

Humor Leading Viral Video Theme in Sept.

Humor was also the overriding common theme among the list of the top 10 viral videos compiled by video content distributor goviral for September 2010. This continued a trend seen in July and August 2010, but much more strongly, as eight of the 10 videos chosen used humor as a foundation. Humorous videos included oversized traveling buttocks getting kicked, funny dances, mock menacing bears, and unusual tests of a memory card's durability.
